What is a Differential Leaf Extract Test?

Extracts cellular fluid for a complete picture of nutrient availability

Sample of old and young leaves to
ascertain nutrient mobility within the plant

Reports on 23 different aspects
of plant nutrition

A differential leaf extract test is a laboratory procedure that uses a sample of plant leaves to assess the presence of nutrients within the plant’s cells. This test involves extracting the cellular fluid from the leaf cells which is then analysed to determine the presence of various nutritional elements that contribute to the plant’s growth and overall health.

Differential Leaf Extract Test vs Traditional Methods

Differential Leaf Extract Test

Comprehensive Sap Testing — young and old leaf

Dry Matter Testing

Traditional method — Dry Matter or Leaf Ash Testing

Swift Deficiency Detection

Reveals nutrient deficiency ahead of time using nutrient flow analysis between old and young leaves

Late Deficiency Detection

Revealed only after the actual nutrient deficiency was caused

Precise Leaf Analysis

Compares nutrient levels in both the young and old leaves of a plant rather than just testing the result in the youngest fully mature leaf

Nutrient Measurement

Measures nutrients in the cell walls of the plant, giving inflated levels of nutrients that are not plant available

Holistic Plant Assessment

Includes sugar content, pH, and EC in addition to macro and micronutrient analysis

General Assessment

Measures nutrient content against averaged industry data, rather than industry leading data.

Early Detection

Early detection of nutrient imbalances, predicting deficiencies or excesses before visible symptoms occur

Failure to Detect Imbalances Early

Often fail to detect deficiencies early enough to prevent significant crop damage or yield loss

Innovative Method

Uses cutting-edge technology to extract cellular fluid from leaves for nutrient analysis

Traditional Method

Only measures a snapshot in time based on the best leaf on the plant (youngest fully mature leaf), not giving insight into lurking deficiencies and imbalances

Why is Differential Leaf Extract Test Important?

Differential leaf extract tests are an essential tool for anyone interested in understanding the health status of their plants. These tests provide valuable information about the nutritional elements affecting plant growth, which can be used to make necessary changes to improve the health of crops and gardens.

✓ Early detection of plant stress: Differential leaf extract tests can detect signs of stress in plants early on, allowing farmers and gardeners to take necessary steps to improve the health of their crops.

Improved crop yield: By detecting and addressing any stress factors in plants, farmers and gardeners can improve the yield of their crops, leading to higher profits.

Better understanding of plant growth: Differential leaf extract tests provide valuable information about the nutritional elements that may be affecting plant growth, allowing for a better understanding of the factors that influence plant health and growth. The report includes 23 different aspects namely Major nutrients (NPK), 4 elements of Nitrogen, Secondary Nutrients (Ca, Mg, S), Trace Minerals, Sugars, pH & EC, Al, Na & CL.

Step-by-Step Process of DSA Test

Sample Collection

Leaf Extraction

Analysis

Interpretation of results

Step 1: Sample Collection

A sample of leaves from the plant is collected in the field and brought to the laboratory for analysis.

Step 2: Leaf Extraction

The cellular leaf fluid is extracted from the leaf sample by using a specially designed extraction method in a controlled Laboratory environment.

Step 3: Analysis

The extracted Leaf Cellular Fluid is then analysed by using various laboratory methods, to determine the presence of various nutritional elements.

Step 4: Interpretation of results

The results of the analysis are then interpreted to determine the health status of the plant.
